I never considered eartags a good solution for identification. I have seen just too many torn ears. Now there seems to appear a special problem concerning Wensleydale Longwools: Their ears are either too thick or the german eartage too tight. All of my rams and one ewe developed inflammation of their ears dew to the eartags - and it happened more than two weeks after the tags had been put in. My oldest ram Séamus had had the tags put through the "old" wholes he already had in his ears, without the skin being even scratched; I had checked it right in the showring. He had these old wholes, as I had had to take out his first set. Same problem then...

Nach dem Entfernen der Ohrmarken wird erst das ganze Ausmaß der Wunde sichtbar... die Marken der anderen Schafe habe ich beim ersten Auftreten der Krusten entfernt. Auch da waren die Schäden jeweils größer als erwartet...Having removed the eartags, the true degree of damage done was showing... I removed the other sheep´s eartags at the first sign of scabs.
